CAMPUS PRIDE
Legislation of the dismantling of diversity, equity and inclusion programs at Kentucky universities in 2025 ignited fear in students. This portrait series showcases different sexualities across Western Kentucky University, aiming to show that pride cannot be silenced.
![]() Sophomore Avery Hunt from Fordsville, Ky., is bisexual, a person who is sexually or romantically attracted to both men and women or more than one sex or gender. Hunt said they realized they liked both men and women at the age of 11, but it wasn’t until the age of 12 that they found out what bisexual was. “I’m not comfortable with labels and I don’t like them that much because everyone is valid and doesn’t need to be defined,” Hunt said. | ![]() Sophomore Sylvia Dodd from Dry Ridge, Ky., is transgender, a person whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. Dodd said she came out in 2022, halfway through her senior year of high school. She said she has found a great circle of people in Bowling Green, Ky., that supports her and her transition. | ![]() Senior Irina Boarman from Owensboro, Ky., is asexual, a person who expresses no sexual feelings or desires for any individuals. Boarman said they originally came out as bisexual.“I remember watching a video of a woman dancing on stage and thinking that may be something I am interested in,” Boarman said. In Boarman's senior year of high school, they said she came out as asexual because they realized no one interested them. |

![]() Senior Marina Gibson from Bowling Green, Ky, is lesbian, a woman who is sexually or romantically attracted exclusively to other women. Gibson said she has always known she was attracted to other girls. “I think what really did it for me was when I realized I had a crush on my best friend in elementary school,” Gibson said. | ![]() Sophomore Lucy Arrington from Glasgow, Ky., is pansexual, someone who is sexually or romantically attracted to all individuals regardless of their sex or gender. Arrington said that she is in a heterosexual marriage and got married in July of 2024. Although she is pansexual, Arrington said her religion, Christianity, is a huge part of her life. “I believe God loves all people for who they are, no matter who you love,” Arrington said. |
